What type of test is performed?
Dascena’s drive-through testing site offers self administered anterior nares, COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostic testing.
Is Dascena Labs a Hawaii Trusted Testing and Travel Partner?
No, not at this time - even though Dascena’s PCR test is a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) from a certified Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) lab.
How is my sample for testing collected?
While you remain in the vehicle, you will be given a swab and asked to collect a sample of nasal secretions. This is done by inserting the swab into your nostril approximately 3/4 inch into the nasal passage (midway) with the most visible drainage or the nostril that is most congested if drainage is not present. The swab is rotated several times (15 seconds), removed gently and this process is repeated on the other side. Please note that you need to administer your own swab or bring someone that can do it for you. Our nurses will walk you through each step on site.
How and when will I get results?
Results are sent to our lab with an average turnaround time of 24-48 hours. You will receive your results via email.
How old can a patient be to get a COVID-19 test?
Age limit is 18 years old. If under 18, we need parent or guardian consent. A parent or legal guardian must complete this registration for all minor patients. We recommend children age 10 or older, but if a younger child can handle the swabbing, then we can administer test with the help of a guardian.
Is there an out-of-pocket cost?
Covered patients should not have any out-of-pocket costs, but you should check with your health plan to confirm before testing. If you have health insurance, you must bring your card with you to the test site. If you do not have insurance, we will ask you for your Social Security number (card not needed), driver's license or state ID to submit the cost of your test to the federal program for the uninsured.
Can I pay for the test instead of submitting to insurance or the uninsured program? What is the cost?
Testing at our collection site is offered for no cost to individuals as we will either bill insurance or the federally uninsured program. We do not charge the patient. Insurance information or a proper ID will be needed in order to have a sample collected. We use the standard medicare rate of $100 when billing medicare or medicaid, and use the industry standard 2.5x multiplier when billing private payors in order to cover our costs.
